Goalsetters Would Like To Introduce You To Mariana Santos!
In the bustling world of fitness, Mariana Santos, a true visionary and entrepreneur, is redefining the industry's landscape. As the founder of Brazily Fitness, she has embarked on a journey to not only revolutionize fitness but also empower fitness instructors to embrace the magic of Brazilian music, dance, and lifestyle. Mariana's story is one of inspiration, dedication, and the unwavering belief in the transformative power of movement.
For several years, Mariana has been the driving force behind Brazily Fitness, a venture that offers certification programs to elevate fitness instructors' careers. These programs seamlessly blend Brazilian music, dance, fitness, and lifestyle, infusing each class with an unparalleled energy that transcends boundaries. With close to two decades of experience as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor, Mariana has witnessed the industry's challenges firsthand. The instability of pay and the demanding schedules, especially for those with families, have ignited her passion to reform the industry from within.
Mariana's journey into the fitness world was catalyzed during her teenage years when she moved to Brazil, an experience that transformed her life. Immersed in the vibrant Brazilian culture, she discovered the profound impact of dance and fitness, not just on the body, but on the mind and soul. This newfound passion became the cornerstone of her fitness career upon returning to Canada, propelling her into a trajectory that would eventually lead to the inception of Brazily Fitness.
The heart of Brazily Fitness lies in its services, particularly the Brazily Dance instructor training. This unique program fuses the contagious rhythm of Brazilian music with invigorating dance moves to create an unparalleled fitness experience. Through this, Mariana and her team equip instructors to empower their members to break free from inhibitions, boost confidence, and embark on transformative journeys within and outside the gym.
Mariana's entrepreneurial success is not only defined by her accomplishments but also by her unwavering commitment to her vision. Though the journey has been a rollercoaster, marked by highs and lows, her resilience shines through. A year ago, she took the bold step of fully committing to her dream, bootstrapping every aspect of her venture. The connections she's forged and the curiosity she's kindled around the Brazily Dance program are testaments to her dedication.
Setting goals has been an instrumental part of Mariana's journey. However, she approaches goal-setting differently, focusing on celebrating small victories along the way. These smaller wins, she believes, eventually accumulate into significant achievements, keeping the flame of motivation alive.
As Mariana states, "A Goal Without A Plan is Just A Wish." Her advice to fellow dream chasers resonates deeply: cultivate a habit of acknowledging small triumphs. Such acknowledgments, she believes, bridge the gap between aspirations and reality, making the journey less daunting and more fulfilling.
Interview on Parade.com: The #1 Best Exercise for Getting Rid of Underarm Fat, According to Personal Trainers
Read Full Interview on Parade.com
Fitness trainers specializing in weight loss share what to do.
Excessive underarm fat can feel uncomfortable, making tops pull tight and restricting arm movement. If you want to get rid of underarm fat, keep reading to find out the best way to do so, according to personal trainers who specialize in weight loss. By putting their tips into practice, you’ll feel more confident and comfortable wearing clothes that show your arms.
What Causes Underarm Fat?
According to Matt Claes, PT, a personal trainer at Weight Loss Made Practical, underarm fat is caused by the same thing as fat in any other part of the body: the body taking in more energy (or calories) than it’s using.
“What’s interesting is that different people with the same amounts of body fat can store the fat in different areas,” Claes says. He explains that while the most common place body fat is stored is around the waist and thighs, at some point, areas such as the underarms can start to accumulate fat too. He says that where the body stores fat is not typically something someone can control. Often, he says it comes down to genetics.
Mariana Santos, PT, a personal trainer and owner of Brazily Fitness Inc., also says that underarm fat is caused by the same reasons that lead to fat on other places of the body, explaining, “Underarm fat can be caused by a combination of genetics, lack of exercise, poor diet and sometimes medical conditions."
She adds that genetics will determine where someone stores more fat and also where they start losing fat first.
The Best Exercise for Getting Rid of Underarm Fat
Since underarm fat is caused by the body taking in more calories than it uses (just like fat in other places on the body), both Claes and Santos say that the best way to get rid of underarm fat is to focus on fat loss in general. Claes says to focus on
cardio workouts like running, cycling and swimming—whatever form of cardio you like best. Additionally, he says doing strength training exercises that specifically target the arms can help tone them as fat is being lost.
Other Tips for Getting Rid of Underarm Fat
Both trainers emphasize that the key to any kind of fat reduction is maintaining a
calorie deficit. “The best way to reach the goal [of getting rid of underarm fat] is to do a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercise as well as make modifications to your diet to ensure that you are eating at a calorie deficit, which will allow you to lose fat overall over time,” says Santos, echoing Claes.
While cardio workouts will help with overall weight loss (including reducing underarm fat), both personal trainers say that it can be beneficial to do strength training exercises that specifically target this area. Below are three to try, according to both trainers:
If you do these moves once to twice a week while maintaining a calorie deficit (that’s where your cardio comes in), Claes says you can expect to see a difference in how your underarms look in about two months.
Losing weight isn’t easy, but it absolutely can be done. With dedication, you can transform the way your arms look. You’ve got this!
Spoiler alert: It isn’t crunches.
For many people, the first place excess fat accumulates is around the middle—which is also
the hardest place to lose fat. In addition to it being annoying, having excessive abdominal fat is linked to
an increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. So, what is the best way to get rid of it?
If you think doing hundreds of crunches every day is the best way to get a smaller waist and get rid of excessive abdominal fat, think again. Here, personal trainers specializing in weight loss set the record straight about common misconceptions they hear from people on the best way to get a smaller waist. Plus, find out what actually works.
If your health goal is to get a smaller waist, it seems logical to prioritize core-strengthening exercises like sit-ups. But
Mariana Santos, PT, a personal trainer and owner of Brazily Fitness Inc, says it’s a myth that this is the best way to go about it. “Unfortunately, lots of people still think that the best way to get a smaller waist or get a six-pack is by doing a million different sit-ups and crunches,” she says.
Matt Claes, PT, a personal trainer at Weight Loss Made Practical, agrees that going all-in on crunches is not the best way to get a smaller waist. “Doing [exercise moves like] crunches, sit-ups and side-bends can make your core muscles bigger, but when it comes to losing any body fat on top of these muscles, you are using your time in a very suboptimal way,” he says.
Something else that isn’t worth your time is waist training, or wearing a corset-like type of shapewear worn to alter the shape and appearance of the midsection. Certified personal trainer Rachel Trotta, CPT, previously explained to Parade
that not only do waist trainers not work for getting a smaller waist, they are also dangerous—disrupting core stability and strength.
If doing lots of crunches or wearing a waist trainer doesn’t lead to getting a smaller waist, what does? Santos and Claes both offer the same advice: maintain a
calorie deficit and focus on an exercise routine with both cardio and strength training.
“These types of exercises will help you burn the most amount of energy with the least amount of time spent in the gym. If you combine these with good habits in other lifestyle areas, you should start seeing your waist get smaller,” Claes says.
Santos emphasizes that it’s not possible to burn fat in a specific area of the body through exercise; that’s why it’s more important to focus on overall calorie burn, which is where cardiovascular activities are beneficial. Examples of cardiovascular exercises include walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, dancing and rowing.
Whichever type of exercise is your favorite, as long as you are getting your heart rate up, your body is benefitting.
The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio exercise a week.
As both Claes and Santos explained, in addition to cardio exercise, strength training exercises can also help reduce fat around the middle. Plus, Santos says that strength training exercises that focus on the shoulders and upper back can help give the illusion of a smaller waist. “As your back gets stronger and more developed, it will create a more hourglass figure which will make your waist look smaller,” she says. Need some to try? Here, Santos and Claes give three examples, which they recommend doing twice a week:
Lat pull-down:
This exercise move requires a lat pull-down machine. To do this exercise move, sit on the pulldown machine, facing the bar. You should be able to reach the bar without standing up; if you can’t, adjust the bar to your height. Grab the bar with an overhand grip. Pull it down until the bar is level with your chin. Your feet should be flat on the floor and your back should be straight the whole time. Slowly return the bar to the starting position. Do three sets of five to 10 reps.
Single-arm dumbbell rows:
This exercise move requires an exercise bench and dumbbell. The dumbbell should feel moderately heavy, neither too easy or too difficult to lift. Start by placing your left knee on the exercise bench and your right foot on the floor, with a slight bend in your right knee. Place your left hand on the bench to support your body. Hold the dumbbell in your right hand. Slowly pull the dumbbell up toward your armpit. Slowly lower it back to the starting position. Do 10 reps. Then, switch sides. Do two more rounds of 10 reps per side.
Deadlifts:
This move requires a barbell and bumper plates. Start by standing in front of the barbell with your feet hip-width distance apart. Bend your knees slightly and maintain a straight spine the entire time. Grab the barbell and lift it above your knees, grazing your legs as you pull it up. Lower the bar back down. Do three sets of five to 10 reps.
While Santos and Claes say that it may take a while for your waist to get smaller, if you stick with it, they say that your hard work will pay off. Eating a healthy diet while prioritizing cardio exercises and strength training (especially those that target the shoulders and upper back) will make your whole body leaner. Besides having a smaller waist, Santos says that these changes can also lead to better posture, having more energy, and even a mood boost. With so many benefits, there’s no time to waist, er, waste!

"It can also be helpful to have more than just one single pair of shoes to choose from. “I recommend having at least two to three different pairs of shoes and rotating between them for each of your dance fitness classes,” says Mariana Santos, creator of Brazily Dance , based in Canada. “This ensures that the shoes will last long and protect your joints through all the jumping, pivoting and twisting you do in dance fitness classes.” If you take anywhere from three to four classes per week, it is also recommended that you get new shoes every four to six months to make sure you have enough cushioning in your shoes and that they have enough integrity to protect your feet, ankles, hips and knees, explains Santos."

Mariana Santos
Founder and CEO of Brazily Fitness Inc.
Located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
We offer instructor certification programs to help instructors build stronger connections and transform people's lives from the inside out through Brazilian music, dance, fitness, and lifestyle.
I was born and raised in Canada and grew up feeling very insecure about my body and really lacked confidence in myself. As a teenager, I moved to Brazil, where my parents are from, and was quickly hit with massive culture shock. I had to learn a new language and make new friends, and I was suddenly in an environment where people took an extra amount of care when it came to their health, appearance, and wellness. At first, it was a huge struggle! My insecurities increased, and I felt like I didn't fit in at all.
Things started to change when I joined a gym and got introduced to Brazilian music and dance and the unique Brazilian approach to fitness and lifestyle. I started feeling more confident in my own skin, had more energy, became less shy, and eventually decided to dive into the fitness industry as a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer once I returned to Canada.
At 25, I decided to move back to Brazil again and further connected with my Brazilian roots and fell more and more in love with the Brazilian culture and vibe. I also met the love of my life, my husband Andre, who had also worked as a Dance Fitness Instructor for years. Our mutual love for Brazilian music and dance definitely created a very strong bond between us! We eventually moved back to Canada to start a family and now have a beautiful daughter named Bella.
And we came back with a mission – to teach as many people as possible about the Brazilian approach to fitness, dance, and overall lifestyle. Because one thing became very clear to me while I was living in Brazil – that if you have as much fun as possible and enjoy the little things in life, there's no limit to what you can achieve! Also, making yourself a priority by living a healthy lifestyle and doing things you love is the furthest thing from selfishness! This mindset shift was life-changing for me, and I now want to show people how amazing life can be when you learn to truly love yourself from the inside out.
Brazily™ Fitness aims to get rid of the toxic "no pain, no gain" mentality and instead focus on taking care of yourself first, unapologetically, by using fitness and dance as tools to live a life you love. Oh, and by making sure you have as much FUN along the way as possible!
Since we are still in our launch phase, I'd say our biggest accomplishment so far has been our resourcefulness in order to get to this point. As a startup with no investors so far, we have managed to progress slowly but surely and have been successful at generating interest around our brand using a mix of organic and paid strategies and by building sincere relationships with other amazing professionals in the industry.
I think the constant battle with your own fears and self-doubt! Just making sure you continue to build momentum, even on the days when you feel defeated.
When you have a big dream, it can feel overwhelming and even impossible some days. I think that as long as you have absolute clarity on what it is you want to do and who you want to serve, the right doors start opening at the right time. Once you have that crystal clear clarity on what you want, don't let anything stop you! Because you will be challenged over and over again, and you will need to consistently prove to yourself that your goals are stronger than any momentary setbacks. And last but not least, make sure you're doing things for the right reason. If you're in it just to make a ton of money, people will sense that and won't be drawn to you and your brand.

As human beings, we are always searching for new ways to find happiness.
The problem is that we tend to think that happiness comes from buying our dream home, finding the perfect soulmate or coming into a large sum of money all of a sudden.
What we don’t realize is that a truly happy life is made up of small moments. It’s about the journey towards your dreams and goals. It’s not the destination on its own!
This is why so many people who win the lottery or reach a big goal don’t really feel any happier.
Dance is an incredible way to build resilience, improve your health in so many ways and boost your confidence, so you can feel unstoppable in all areas of your life. It’s also a really simple way to boost your mood and increase feelings of joy and overall happiness.
With dance, you need to allow yourself to be a beginner again. Just like a toddler who is learning how to walk and falls numerous times before taking their first real steps, you need to understand that there’s so much beauty in not giving up until you achieve what you want, no matter how challenging it may seem.
As children, we are fearless. We aren’t afraid of trying and failing. As we get older, we become more and more self-conscious and worry too much about what other people are thinking of us. This causes us to hold back and not really go after what we want in life for fear of being judged.
Dance reminds us that even if we don’t know how to do something perfectly the first time we try, with patience and dedication, we can improve. It also teaches us that life isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about trying your best and having as much fun as you can along the way!
Dance reminds us that just because something may seem difficult at first, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. It allows us to focus on progression, building confidence over time, and that shows us that we can do hard things!
This newfound level of confidence then transfers into all areas of your life because you start to realize that if you keep trying, have faith and believe in yourself, there’s no limit to what you can achieve!
The secret in life is to focus on one step at a time. This allows us to live life more in the moment, decrease levels of anxiety and learn to go with the flow more.
In the end, people always learn that the little moments that led up to the big goals were actually the most important and memorable ones.
If you want to add more life to your years, dancing is such a simple way to do that. No dance skills required. You do not need to be a professional dancer to reap all the amazing benefits dance has to offer. You just have to be willing to try, to make mistakes, smile and keep going.
Live your life one dance step at a time and watch the magic happen!

While technological advances have contributed significantly to society, they have also caused tremendous harm. It has never been easier to have anything you want delivered to your doorstep or to distract yourself from responsibilities with social media. The entire world is now paying the price for these conveniences as we see a rise in obesity and an overall decrease in resiliency. People are quitting on their goals faster than ever before and are therefore living lives riddled with disease, stress, anxiety and depression. We believe the dance and fitness industry has the power to change this narrative, with the right strategies in place.
OTTAWA, ON
July 11, 2022
/PRNewswire/ -- Brazily™ Fitness, which offers fitness programs based on the unique Brazilian approach to lifestyle, health and fitness, announced today the launch of their signature dance fitness program, Brazily™ Dance in the United States and Canada. This program uses authentic Brazilian music and dance to inspire confidence, joy, love and fun into the lives of its participants. We are now looking to license instructors who embody our mission so we can make a greater impact on the world, one class at a time.
Fitness has always been the best way to build resilience and patience. However, over the past several years, with the rise in popularity of social media, the fitness industry has had a hard time staying true to these foundational principles in order to compete in an overly saturated market.
The industry has shifted their messaging and marketing in a way that promises quick and easy results which is extremely detrimental.
With this kind of messaging, people are becoming less capable of dealing with frustrations in life because they are brought to believe that life should be easy and that it requires little effort to achieve results they want.
Most dance fitness classes have also lost their dance essence since instructors feel the need to simplify their classes because people don't have enough patience to learn and progress.
As leaders, we need to be coaching people on the importance of doing hard things! It is through challenges that we grow and evolve. It is through challenges that we build confidence in ourselves to achieve great things. Dealing with the ups and downs in life with grace is essential to living a happier, more fulfilled life.
We are looking for instructors who understand that their impact goes beyond their fitness classes. We are looking for leaders to inspire people to live more confident lives following our unique Brazily™ Dance formula and principles.
Life isn't about making things as easy as possible. It's about rising to the challenges and becoming a stronger, healthier and happier version of yourself.
This is precisely the kind of impact Brazily™ Dance will have on the world.
